Austonio is located in Houston County, Texas, approximately 160 miles southeast of Dallas and 110 miles north of Houston. The city is home to a population of approximately 40 residents who enjoy the relaxed hometown atmosphere and fabulous temperate climate that produces perfect weather for enjoying the beautiful East Texas outdoors.

Austonio is served by the Lovelady and Crockett Independent School Districts. The city is located within 40 minutes of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville and the Angelina College Career & Technical Center in Crockett.

Austonio is located just 30 miles south of Houston County Lake, a 1,330-acre recreational reservoir that is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and watersports. Lake amenities include two public boat launches, a full-service marina, bait and tackle shop, sandy swimming beach, and resort campground, complete with volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and a miniature golf course. Stocked by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, the lake is known for its excellent catches of largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish.

Austonio is located less than an hour from Davy Crockett National Park, a 160,000-acre expanse of pine forests, woodlands, wetlands, and waterways that are perfect for fishing, boating, hunting, camping, hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The forest is home to the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, starting point for the Four C National Recreation Trail that takes hikers on a wilderness trek through the Piney Woods of East Texas before terminating twenty miles to the north at Neches Bluff Overlook.

Popular area events include the annual 4th of July Boat Parade at Houston County Lake and the El Camino Real “Sale on the Trail,” a two-day shopping extravaganza held the first weekend in May that features 200 miles of sidewalk sales, yard sales, and garage sales along historic Highway 21 from Crockett, Texas to Natchitoches, Louisiana.
